Q: What is ONTBIRDS, anyway?
A: ONTBIRDS is the Ontario Field Ornithologists electronic mailing listserv that notifies birders of interesting Ontario bird sightings. See http://www.ofo.ca/information/ontbirdssetup.php for more information.
Q: Do I have to be an ONTBIRDS subscriber to use iONTBIRDS?
A: Anyone can use iONTBIRDS to read postings, but you must be a subscriber in order to post to ONTBIRDS.
Q: iONTBIRDS only downloads the last 10 days of postings. Can I change that?
A: No, not as yet. We’ve avoided the added complexity of a settings screen in the hope that 10 days will be a generally useful interval. Please let us know if you disagree.
Q: Can I run iONTBIRDS without network connectivity?
A: Yes, you’ll be able to view and search postings that have previously been downloaded to the device. You may also be able to revisit maps that you’ve previously displayed. But you won’t be able to download new postings or hot spots.
Q: Can I run iONTBIRDS without location services?
A: Yes, but you won’t be able to show your current location in the map view. Also, when composing a new posting, the device won’t be able to determine your location. For more information about location services, see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1975.
Q: Can I run iONTBIRDS on an iPad or iPod touch?
A: Yes, but bear in mind that some of the key features of the app involve connection to the Internet (for reading new postings and hot spots) and access to the location service (for determining your current location). In the field, a WiFi-only device without 3G will only be able to read and search postings that have already been downloaded onto the device.
